On April 10th, 2020, I decided to sit down for a profile story interview with digital journalist and reporter Kristina Pritchett. Kristina was born in California, but moved at an early age and grew up in Pitman, New Jersey. Then she graduated Rowan University as a journalism major in 2013. She is now 29 years old, and living in Boulder, Colorado reporting and writing for two different newspapers: The Colorado Hometown Weekly, and The Boulder Daily Camera. Kristina started off her career by writing for the Daily Paper in New Jersey. “I started off as a copy editor, and slowly made my way to becoming a reporter.” Then in May of 2015, she and others at the Daily Paper were laid off so she decided to move back to California where she had friends and family living at the time. After working for a local paper in California for 2 years, she decided her work life balance was not equal and began to look for a change. She then moved to Colorado to live with her best friend. Kristina currently covers city government, and city council meetings for the town of Boulder. “ I’ve only been doing my job since July, but I’ve been covering city governments (which is my main beat) since I graduated college.” When asked about what is challenging about covering her beat Kristina said “ I cover 4 towns, so one of the most challenging aspects is definitely deciding which town to go to on Tuesdays” which is the night that city council meetings occur. We then started to discuss how she implements different forms of technology into her writing, and how Twitter has become a great tool for her to get her work out there, and as well to converse with fans and readers. “I primarily use Twitter on a daily basis which I think a lot of reporters are doing now.” Next, I asked Kristina’s opinion on what kind of role digital journalism plays in the grand scheme of journalism and reporting as a whole, and where the field is headed. She cited how the pandemic has increased the utility of instant information and how online journalism is extremely useful in updating stories, and making sure the information going out is the most current and accurate. I then asked Kristina what her favorite part about covering her beat was, and if there was any reward that comes from covering that topic. “ I’d say the most rewarding thing for me is when residents come up to me and thank me for my stories…… part of our job is basically being a translator and helping the residents fully understand what they are reading.” To wrap up our interview I asked her a bit of a cliche, but thought that it was important to ask: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received or given? “First, don’t be afraid to ask questions.” Even though I’ve heard this from a lot of people, but the way Kristina explained it really made a ton of sense for my question. She then went on a little more to explain how she had to apply to her current job 3 times before she finally got the job, so she emphasized perseverance , and also discussed the importance of finding a beat that interests you. All in all, this profile interview with Kristina Pritchett was really informative, and was a nice break to all the craziness that’s been going on. I hope this profile of Kristina was entertaining and informative to read. Check out my Twitter to keep up with my latest posts, and stay safe!
